The floral metalpoint is a close up from a bunch of flowers that my wife, Elizabeth had set up on the dining room table. Every time that I walked past them I saw different compositions and eventually got around to photographing them before they died. The composition is almost as I photographed it. Often I move shapes around the composition and even invent shapes within the picture, but in this example the composition worked for me as found.

I have had an involvement since my abstract expressionist period during the 1960s with an overall composition and not compromising the flatness of the papers surface. Photographing the flowers in close up keeps the composition quite flat by eliminating any background and gives interest to the viewer by bringing the flowers into an unusual view.
